Writing Our Stories, Part One

Using the framework of guided autobiography and sensitizing questions, participants will write their stories two pages at a time using a different theme each week. Writing is done outside of our class time, and takes most people 2-3 hours a week. In-class activities include writing exercises and sharing stories. Written feedback in what Mimi calls "clarity comments" will be given on each story you write. You will learn more about yourself and the choices made on your life journey. Attendance the first week is required. You don’t need to be a great writer to do this!

Writing our Stories, Part One will be offered Wednesday afternoons starting January 15, 2025 and meeting 2 hours weekly on Zoom for 7 classes ( January 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19 & 26). Class will meet on Zoom from 1 to 3 pm Central time.

Let Mimi know if you are interested, and what days and times work best for you. Cost is $210. Class needs 3 participants to go and is capped at 5 so we hear everyone's stories each week.

As of December 16, 2024 the class is full.

Guided Autobiography is a wonderful process of writing your life stories two pages at a time (about 1000 words) using a theme such as Family, Branching Points, Your Relationship to Money, Travel, and Cultural Heritage. Each theme comes with a page of sensitizing questions that will help your memories flow to the surface.

The first week we become acquainted, lay down ground rules and try some exercises to encourage creativity and stir up memories. Between our class meetings you write your story. Second through sixth classes have Mimi presenting for the first hour, with everyone sharing their stories in the second hour. You will learn more about yourself, your classmates, and the choices we each made on our life journey.

Your written stories are an incredible legacy for your family. Don't you wish you had a set of stories from your parents or grandparents?

The class needs 3 to go, and is capped at 6. Cost is $140 for the seven class Part One series. One half-price scholarships is available per series (1 per every 6 students), so the scholarship cost would be $70 for the series of six classes. If 6 students, we will meet an extra half hour after the first class to allow enough time to hear all participants' stories: 10-12:30 or 5-7:30.

You do not need to be a "great" writer to do this!

Classes are offered throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring. Currently Mimi is not teaching during the summer; she encourages students to use this time to edit and revise stories as well as meet monthly with other students in their group.
